ResultWhat it means
A1: starting outGreetings, a few everyday words and the sounds of Luxembourgish are still new. This is a normal place to start and the fastest level to improve from
A2: usable basicsEveryday basics are working. The gap to the exam is longer spoken answers: talking about yourself, your week and a picture for a minute at a time
B1: close to the examThe basics are solid. What decides the exam now is listening accuracy at natural speed and speaking with confidence under time

How the result connects to the Sproochentest

The Sproochentest, run by INLL for nationality procedures, asks for A2 in speaking and B1 in listening. INLL describes the A2 speaking target as being able to introduce yourself and speak in simple terms about family, other people, living conditions, education and occupation, and to describe and compare people, things and activities in simple terms. At B1 listening you understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school and leisure.

Your level test result tells you how far you are from each target:

  • A1 result. You build the foundations first: first words, introductions, numbers, family, work, directions and cafés.
  • A2 result. You are at the speaking level. The work now is stretching short answers into connected answers of several sentences and describing pictures.
  • B1 result. You are at the listening level. The work is accuracy on spoken texts at natural speed and answering follow-up questions under time.

What your first week looks like

  • A1. The six free lessons add up to 81 minutes: sounds and survival phrases (12 minutes), introducing yourself (14), numbers and contact details (15), family, work and routine (13), getting around (14) and café and shop basics (13).
  • A2. Pick one oral topic a day and answer it aloud in several sentences. The topics are family, work, leisure, housing, daily routine, hobbies, travel and health.
  • B1. Open B1 listening set 1: a radio news item about a library's evening hours, an everyday conversation about helping a neighbour and a presentation about volunteering in the neighbourhood.

Where your result starts in the lesson list

MoienLab's 57 lessons follow the same levels as the test, so your result points to a place in the list:

Your resultLessons to open firstLesson time at that level
A1Lessons 1 to 15, from sounds and survival phrases to the phone240 minutes
A2Lessons 16 to 35, from talking about yesterday to your life in Luxembourg388 minutes
B1Lessons 36 to 57, from building an argument to the Sproochentest conversation550 minutes

Each lesson takes between 12 and 25 minutes.

Who the test is for

The level test is for people living in Luxembourg who are preparing the Sproochentest for naturalisation, and for anyone starting Luxembourgish who wants to know where to begin. The test places you on the route. INLL runs the Sproochentest itself, and registration for the March 2027 sessions opens on MyINL on Tuesday 10 November 2026 at 10:00.

Why check your level first

Official guidance counts an average of 400 hours of lessons from zero to the levels the Sproochentest asks for, according to lifelong-learning.lu. A learner who already speaks some Luxembourgish has part of those hours behind them, and the level test shows how much. A result takes the guesswork out of the first week: you start on lessons that fit, instead of repeating what you know or skipping what you need.

When to take the test

  • Before you start studying, so you spend your first week on the right level.
  • Before you book your Sproochentest, so you pick a session date that matches your level and your calendar.
