Context: Use these phrases in shops, lifts, offices, cafés, and first meetings. Focus on being understood, not sounding perfect.
Register note:
  • Moien works in both formal and informal situations. It is the safest default greeting.
  • An Iech? is the polite/formal “and you?”; with friends or classmates you will often hear An dir?

Sound notes

  • Moien sounds close to “moy-en”; keep it short and friendly.
  • The letter ë is a soft, central vowel. In bëssen, keep it light rather than stressed.
  • Dir is the polite “you”; du is informal and appears in later lessons.
