Sproochentest study plan: how many hours a week you need
Official guidance counts 400 hours of lessons from zero to the Sproochentest levels. Turn it into your weekly hours, timeline and a routine that adds up.
The Ministry of Education's lifelong-learning.lu portal counts an average of 400 hours of lessons to take someone with no Luxembourgish to the levels the Sproochentest asks for. Divide 400 by the hours you can give each week and you have your timeline; the routine below fills those hours.
The official number
lifelong-learning.lu states that someone with no knowledge of the Luxembourgish language will require an average of 400 hours of lessons to reach the required levels, which are A2 for speaking and B1 for listening. If you already speak some Luxembourgish, you start part of the way along, and the free level test shows how far.
Your timeline: 400 hours divided by your weekly hours
| Hours per week | Weeks to reach 400 hours | About |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 80 | 18 months |
| 8 | 50 | 11 to 12 months |
| 10 | 40 | 9 months |
| 15 | About 27 | 6 months |
| 20 | 20 | 4 to 5 months |
The table is plain arithmetic on the official average. Pick the row that matches your week and count forward from today to see which Sproochentest session fits.
What counts as an hour
Every hour of contact with Luxembourgish moves you toward the 400:
- Classes. INLL's standard course has 2 to 3 classes per week in 100 minute classes over one semester, which is 3 hours 20 minutes to 5 hours of class time per week.
- Guided lessons. MoienLab's 57 lessons run 12 to 25 minutes each and add up to 1,178 minutes, close to 20 hours of guided lesson time, with 570 exercises around them.
- Repetition. Review cards, replaying audio and repeating lines aloud.
- Speaking. Recorded answers, conversation with colleagues, neighbours or a language partner.
- Listening. Radio, news and the B1 listening sets.
The 57 lessons give your route its spine. The rest of your hours come from repeating, recording yourself and listening, which is what the exam tests.
A balanced week
This week adds up to 3 hours 20 minutes of focused work and scales up with extra classes or longer sessions:
| Block | Minutes | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| 3 lessons | 60 | Work one lesson per session, listen to every line, repeat it aloud |
| 3 review sessions | 45 | Short review on days without a lesson |
| 2 spoken answers | 30 | Record a topic answer, replay it, record it again |
| 1 picture description | 15 | Use the same route each time: who, where, what they are doing, details, feeling |
| 1 listening text | 20 | Listen once without transcript, answer, listen again, then read the transcript |
| 1 real conversation | 30 or more | Speak Luxembourgish with a real person |
Add a second set of lessons, a class or a longer speaking session to reach 8 hours a week.
Pacing the 57 lessons
The average MoienLab lesson runs 20.7 minutes (1,178 minutes over 57 lessons). Your lessons per week set how long the guided route takes:
| Lessons per week | Weeks to finish 57 lessons | Lesson time per week |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 19 | About 62 minutes |
| 4 | 15 | About 83 minutes |
| 5 | 12 | About 103 minutes |
| 7 | 9 | About 145 minutes |
Three weekly budgets
| Weekly hours | Classes | Lessons | Review | Speaking | Listening | Conversation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 hours (180 min) | 0 | 60 | 40 | 40 | 20 | 20 |
| 8 hours (480 min) | 200 | 80 | 60 | 80 | 60 | 0 |
| 15 hours (900 min) | 300 | 140 | 120 | 180 | 100 | 60 |
The 8 hour and 15 hour budgets use INLL's standard course format of 2 to 3 classes per week in 100 minute classes. Without classes, move those minutes to speaking and conversation, the two skills the exam tests directly.
Count backwards from your session
Take the table row that matches your week, subtract those weeks from the date of the session you want and you have your start date. INLL publishes the dates and places of each session on its website at least one month before the registration deadline (regulation of 22 July 2019, article 2), and each session on MyINL shows its own deadline. Registration for the March 2027 sessions opens on Tuesday 10 November 2026 at 10:00.
Track three numbers each week
- Minutes studied. Compare them with your weekly budget.
- Lessons finished out of 57. The count shows your pace against the table above.
- Recorded answers. Aim for at least two, replay each one and keep the first recording of a topic so you can compare it with your latest.
Your plan by starting level
| Level test result | Weeks 1 to 4 | Then |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | Lessons 1 to 15 (240 minutes in total): sounds, introductions, numbers, family, work, directions, cafés, appointments, admin, health, shopping, transport, restaurants, phone | A2 lessons 16 to 35 with a recorded topic answer every week |
| A2 | A2 oral practice on eight topics, one topic per session, and photo description | B1 listening sets and the B1 lessons |
| B1 | Listening set 1, then sets 2 to 4, with the transcript only after you answer | Timed mock exam every week, and recorded interviews |
| B2 | Mock exam to check the task types and timing | Recorded interviews and picture descriptions to sharpen speed |
The last four weeks before your test
- Take the timed mock exam, which includes the listening and oral tasks, once a week and review every answer.
- Do two B1 listening texts a week at natural speed.
- Record three interview answers a week on different topics: family, work, leisure, housing, daily routine, hobbies, travel and health.
- Describe one picture a week out loud from start to finish, without stopping.
- Rehearse the opening and recovery lines of the exam conversation: greeting, asking for a repeat and asking for a moment to think.
