Sproochentest fee reimbursement: how to get your 75 euros back

Sproochentest fee reimbursement: the State refunds the full 75 euro fee when you pass, plus course fees up to 750 euros. Who qualifies, what to send, when.

When you pass the Sproochentest, the State refunds the whole registration fee of 75 euros. You claim it from the Ministry of Justice once your nationality application is in, and Luxembourgish course fees come back too, up to 750 euros. This guide gives you the amounts, the documents and the order of the steps.

The exam refund is a right written into the regulation. Article 4(2) says that the candidate who passed "obtient un remboursement intégral" of the registration fee, on a request addressed to the minister who has nationality in their portfolio. Guichet.lu names that office: the Ministry of Justice, Nationality Office.

How the exam fee refund works

The fee is 75 euros, as the INLL FAQ and the Guichet.lu prerequisites page state. INLL links a description of the payment modalities on the MyINL offer page, and your registration file includes the proof of payment (regulation, article 3(1)). Article 17(1) of the nationality law gives the principle: on a request backed by supporting documents, the State reimburses the registration fees of the language examination under the conditions and ceiling set by Grand-Ducal regulation. For the exam, the regulation sets the refund at the full fee.

The refund follows a pass. You pass the Sproochentest in two ways, both in article 15(2) of the law:

  • You score at least half of the points in the speaking test.
  • Or your speaking score falls below half and the arithmetic average of your speaking and listening scores, rounded up, reaches half of the points.

The pass mark and scoring guide walks through both routes with the 20/80 examiner weighting.

Your proof of the pass is the certificate. INLL issues a single signed copy and sends it to you by registered letter (regulation, article 12), and the INLL FAQ states that the certificate is valid for an unlimited period. Make a copy the day it arrives, because the claim needs one.

The order of the steps

  1. Register and pay. Create your MyINL account, choose a session and pay the 75 euro fee. Keep the receipt or the record of your bank transfer. Registrations for the March 2027 sessions open on Tuesday 10 November 2026 at 10:00 on MyINL, and the registration guide covers each screen.
  2. Sit the two tests. Speaking at level A2 and listening at level B1.
  3. Receive your pass certificate by registered letter.
  4. Submit your nationality application to the civil registrar of your commune.
  5. Send the reimbursement request to the Ministry of Justice.

Step 4 comes before step 5 by rule. Guichet.lu says you can only send your claim after you have submitted your application for Luxembourg nationality to the civil registrar of your commune, and the Ministry's form repeats it in its first instruction. Your refund therefore follows your application, not your exam result.

What to send to the Ministry of Justice

The Ministry publishes a two-page form on Guichet.lu, "Demande de remboursement des frais d'inscription à l'examen de langue luxembourgeoise et aux cours de langue luxembourgeoise", reference MJ_IN_REM_F_202409_0. It exists in French and in German. Fill it in and attach these documents:

  • The form itself, dated and signed by hand or digitally. It asks for your name, date, place and country of birth, address, and the account holder, BIC and IBAN of the account that receives the money.
  • Proof that you paid the exam fee. The form accepts a receipt issued by INLL or a copy of the bank transfer.
  • A copy of your pass certificate. The regulation lists it beside the proof of payment (article 4(2)).
  • A bank identity statement (RIB) issued by your bank.
  • For course fees: one or more receipts from INLL or from the organisation whose programme the minister approved, showing the number of hours attended and the amount paid.
  • For the 1,500 euro ceiling: a certificate from a specialist doctor attesting the need for the reasonable accommodation (regulation, article 15(3)).

On the form you tick the exam, the courses, or both, so one request covers every claim. The Ministry's address is Ministère de la Justice, Service de la nationalité luxembourgeoise, 13 rue Erasme, postal address L-2934 Luxembourg, and the form lists the telephone number (+352) 247 84547 for questions about its content.

Course fees: 750 euros, or 1,500 with an accommodation

Article 15(1) of the regulation refunds registration fees up to 750 euros for two kinds of course:

  • The 24-hour introduction to Luxembourgish of article 28 of the law, the course behind the option for people who have lived in Luxembourg for at least 20 years. Guichet.lu notes that each organiser sets its own fee, which is why the receipts matter.
  • Other Luxembourgish courses organised by INLL or with a programme approved by the minister of education.

Article 17(1) of the law adds the timing: the course must have been followed before you sign the naturalisation application or the option or recovery declaration. Take the course, keep every receipt, then file.

The ceiling rises to 1,500 euros when the course was followed with a reasonable accommodation under article 15(4) of the law. That article lists the adaptations: classroom or seating arrangements, a separate room, an adapted presentation of the questionnaires, extra time, extra breaks, tests held outside the school, at home or in an institution, and technological or human aids. For the higher ceiling, attach the certificate from a specialist doctor attesting the need for the accommodation.

The Vivre ensemble course and exam need no refund. Registration is free under article 17(2) of the law. The Vivre ensemble guide explains the three modules and the exam.

Postponing, withdrawing and retaking

Three rules decide what happens to your fee before the refund stage:

  • Postponement. A written request that reaches INLL at least 10 days before the first test moves your registration to an exam organised within 12 months of the initial registration. A later request means a new registration and the fee again (regulation, article 4(3)).
  • Withdrawal. The INLL FAQ states that a candidate who withdraws without a valid reason or does not show up receives no refund and registers again. INLL also publishes an exam refund request form for the cases covered by the ministerial regulation that fixes its fees.
  • Retaking. The number of attempts is unlimited, and you can register again once the results of your previous test are out (INLL FAQ). Each registration carries its own fee.

If you need a reasonable accommodation for the exam, send your medical advice through the INLL contact form as soon as your registration is confirmed. The regulation also allows a reasoned request in the registration file (article 3(1)).

Make your first sitting the one that counts

A pass turns the exam fee into money that returns in full: one registration, one refund. Each extra sitting adds a registration fee of its own, so the cheapest route is to arrive at the first sitting ready for both papers, the A2 interview with a picture description and the B1 listening test.

Start by measuring where you are. The free level test takes 12 questions across A1, A2 and B1, needs no account and tells you your level with a clear next step. Then follow the plan in how to prepare for the Sproochentest. MoienLab Full Access gives you the complete practice route for 12 months with one payment and no subscription: all 57 lessons from A1.1 to B1, A2 oral practice, photo description, B1 listening and the timed mock exam.

The naturalisation guide places the language exam, the Vivre ensemble certificate and your application in one timeline, so you know exactly when your reimbursement request goes out.

FAQ

How much of the Sproochentest fee is reimbursed?

All of it. Article 4 of the Grand-Ducal regulation of 22 July 2019 gives the candidate who passed a full reimbursement of the registration fee, which INLL and Guichet.lu state as 75 euros. You ask the minister in charge of nationality, with proof of payment and a copy of your pass certificate.

When can I send the reimbursement request?

Once you have submitted your nationality application to the civil registrar of your commune. Guichet.lu and the Ministry of Justice form both set this order, so the request follows your application, not your exam result.

Who do I send the request to?

To the Ministry of Justice, Service de la nationalité luxembourgeoise, 13 rue Erasme, postal address L-2934 Luxembourg. The form carries the telephone number (+352) 247 84547 for questions about its content.

How much of a Luxembourgish course is reimbursed?

Registration fees up to 750 euros for the 24-hour course of article 28 and for other courses run by INLL or with a programme approved by the minister, taken before your application. The ceiling is 1,500 euros for a course followed with a reasonable accommodation, with a specialist doctor's certificate attesting the need.

Is the Vivre ensemble course refundable?

There is nothing to claim. Registration for the Vivre ensemble course and exam is free under article 17 of the nationality law, and Guichet.lu repeats it.
