Register note:
- Wéi heescht Dir? is formal/polite. Use it with staff, officials, teachers, and people you do not know well.
- Wéi heeschs du? is informal. Use it with friends, classmates, children, or when the other person has moved to du.
Sound notes
- Ech is short and common. You will hear it constantly.
- Heeschen / heeschs / heescht are all about names; final -n may drop before many consonants: Ech heesche Sofia, but Ech heeschen Anna/Tom.
- Use Dir for polite situations and du with friends, classmates, or peers who invite it.
